Ilford HP5Plus

I have experimented with HP5Plus using different shooting and development methods, push processing, and pull processing, too, to have fun! It is a fabulous film that is still in production nowadays.

Mostly, I was really surprised about its degree of accommodation towards different ways of artistic creation. It has a base ASA of 400, but I shot it with 320, 400, 800...even 1600! The images all came out alright, depending on the kind of photographic or visual dialogue one would like to convey.

    Here are some examples:

  • HP5plus, 135, shot in asa 400

  • Xtol stock solution

  • 5 min pre-soak with water

  • 7 min development time without agitation

  • No image editing

What Google AI says about:

Personal experience:
  • I found HP5P very versatile & wide latitude that can work with different developers
  • Xtol and HP5P work wonderfully together
  • Fine-grained
All the above images were directly out from the scanner without post-editing, the contrast, brightest, grain, shadow, highlight etc. were real and true. Though most modern editing apps can easily recreate the look of them, the shooting & developing experience with actual film is quite the opposite.
